GMA - OCTOBER -
2004
Pedro Sanchez is definitely
in the running for the most airplanes,
and now probably inching close to the top in largest also.
Mike Kinsey continues to
enjoy his 1/5th scale P-51
And, on Sunday (Halloween)
October 31st, Mike Altis flys his pure jet BVM King Cat at the GMA
field. Mike got in his 21st through 24th flight on this airplane
this day. Quite a crowd pleaser.
And a few comments about the King Cat from
Mike:
It took longer to build than I originally planned, but it was worth the
wait. The GMA site is perfect for flying jets... No problem with taking
off and landing on the paved runway. A little about the Kingcat... The
Kingcat is made by BVM(Bob Violett Models) and it is BVM's
first ARF jet kit. The kit comes very complete including fuel cells,
landing gear, wheels, brakes and all of the hardware needed to complete.
The only accessories missing of course are the turbine, servos and receiver.
The Kingcat is big! Length is 94", Wingspan is 80", Weight-
Dry @ 27 lbs, Wet- @40lbs!! That's right- It carries 168ozs of Jet
A or K1 Kerosene. With the Jetcat P120(@ 27-30lbs of thrust), flight
time is between 10-14 mins depending on throttle usage. The nice thing
about the Kingcat is that it is very aerobatic and can fly very fast(200
mph +) and very slow(20-30mph). The landing gear was designed to fly off
grass fields and is very sturdy. The biggest difference in flying a
turbine is the throttle lag and of course the high speed. I hope
to get more GMA flights in soon and experiment with more of it's
aerobatic capabilities. Here is a nice article written by Craig
Gottschang(GA Jets Member) on building the Kingcat- http://www.georgiajets.org/Library/Tips_and_Techniques/King_Cat/King_Cat_Article.pdf
